Steps General Applicant USRA Referee Applicant
Step 1
Register
Register and indicate which training session you will attend. A training class at Cambridge Boat Club is required of umpires living close to Boston. Remote umpires review online materials and take a test if they are new.

Register and indicate if you would like to take an online test or attend a training session. USRA referees are not required to attend training but must pass test to officiate.

Step 2
Pass Exam
New umpires must pass exam given at end of training session. Pass exam emailed to you in September.
Step 3
Team Assignment
The most experienced and highest scoring umpires will be assigned to teams.
Step 4
Team Meetings
Team meetings can be conducted online within discussion group. The lead umpire will review roles, preparation, and process.
Step 5
Officiate at Regatta
One day minimum. Two is preferred. If you are a lead Umpire, all sessions are required.
Step 6
Be Available for Appeals
Available via cell phone 48 hours after regatta in case of appeal.
